German Language Services was founded in 1990, principally to offer quality German language tuition to individuals and businesses with a connection with Germany. We are based in Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, and offer German language tuition in South Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes; we also offer an on-line translation service from German into English.

May I introduce myself as the business owner. My name is Pauline Wolfenden and I have a vast experience of teaching German. My interest in Germany, the country and its language, really started when I stayed for a short time in the country with a pen-friend when I was fifteen.

Fired with enthusiasm I studied German at London University and the University of Tübingen, in Germany. This study was followed by a teaching qualification (PGCE) in modern languages at Goldsmiths College, London.

Although I have taught German in schools, I have specialised in teaching adults, and have taught German at all levels in Adult Education.

Why learn another language?

For travel abroad, either on holiday or business. Being able to greet people, ask for simple directions or order from a menu with confidence can vastly increase your enjoyment of a holiday. And in an emergency, even very basic phrases can help make your needs known.

For business use. The ability to communicate with customers in their own language will be really appreciated by them.

Because you want to be able to communicate with relatives and friends who speak the language. Maybe you have grandchildren living in another country or a family member/friend marries into a family from another country or culture.
To support your children who are learning at school. Learning a language together as a family can be fun.

Because you own a property in or intend to move to a German-speaking country, when having a working knowledge of the language is essential.

Because you want a new challenge.

To keep your mind active.

Because of an interest in the culture and way of life of places where the language is spoken.

To have a pleasant time out amongst like-minded people.
One-to-one tuition?

One-to-one tuition?

We offer one-to-one tuition at all levels, from beginner to advanced. This can often provide the best way of learning, because it can be tailored to your individual requirements, both in content and flexibility. So if your need for German is in a specialised area, if you need to learn some basics quickly, maybe before visiting a German-speaking country, or if committing to a regular time is difficult, then this may be the best option for you.

One-to-one would also be something to consider if you are at school and need to practise for forthcoming exams or maybe you need to brush up on your knowledge of grammar. Very often individual tuition in a different environment, where things can be explained in a different way, can quite quickly clear up problem areas.

However, one-to-one is not necessarily the easiest or best way to learn, particularly for beginners, because it not not provide as much interaction as a class environment, where you can learn from others in the class and take part in more flexible learning activities.
